Mario Kart DS - Tips & Tricks
Home >> Mario Kart DS >> Tips & Tricks

Look at some of these skilful tips and tricks.

Here's a list of tips that are important to making you the ultimate player:

Click here for the Advanced Tactics.

Boosting:

  1. The boost at the start of the race is the ultimate advantage needed to win over opponents. To get a turbo start hold the gas halfway between "2" and "1". Once you get the timing, you'll get it right. If you go to early, you'll spin out of control, however if you go to fast you'll start normally.
  2. If you fall off the course; when Lakitu lifts you back onto the track, make sure you apply the gas the moment you hit the ground to get a turbo boost to get you back into the race.
  3. Another way of boosting is to race behind opponents in front of you for slipstream, which will give you extra speed to overtake them.
  4. Remember to use the boost pads and boost ramps to gain extra speed.

Powersliding

Powerslide Turbo Boosts:

  1. Powerslide turbo boosts are easy to perform once you have mastered it. Whilst going around a corner hold the "R" button to drift; whilst holding R, move left to right to create a blue spark underneath your tyres, then left to right again to create a red spark. Then release R to gain a turbo boost.
  2. When powersliding on your left-hand side use the manouvre above but move right-to-left instead. On the other hand, if your powersliding on your right-hand side steer left-to-right.
  3. Repetitive powerslide turbo boosts can create maximum boosting, which will create a zig-zag shape similar to a snake, hence the name "snaking".

Weapons Handling:

  1. You will receiver better items if you are in latter places (6th, 7th or 8th).
  2. Save your items for an appropriate time to use them.
  3. Place bananas and fake item boxes in narrow passageways that your opponents have to go through. Try and aim for the middle.
  4. Place fake item boxes in the place of real item boxes.
  5. Remember you can dangle items behind you by holding the L button. Use this to stop opponents getting in front and to allow you to get another item. Also this is used to block yourself from getting hit.
  6. You can shoot shells backwards by holding down when shooting.
  7. You can throw items forward (banana, bomb or fake box) by holding up when shooting.

Using the Map:

Watch out Mario - You're gonna get hit!

  1. Look on the touch screen above. As you can see Mario is about to get hit by a green shell. Use the touch screen to see where an item has been shot so you can dodge it.
  2. Use the map to see what items your opponents have. This will give you an advantage. Especially if you see someone has a blue shell; then drop back from 1st position to 2nd, so the opponent that just zoomed in front of you gets blown up.
  3. Use the map to aim your weapons and to drop your items in the middle of the track.
  4. Use the map to distinguise if an item box is fake. Fake item boxes are red.

The Kart:

  1. If you want to be better than snakers, you'll have to snake yourself, therefore you must pick a suitable kart. The best karts have a high handling ability and a low drift ability, which makes it easier to snake more.
  2. I would recommend Yoshi's Egg 1 kart.
  3. Choose weighty karts on arenas/ courses with many drops. Use your weight to push into them and knock them off.
  4. Unlock all the karts!
