Mario Kart DS - Snaking
Home >> Mario Kart DS >> Snaking
Helping you to develop the snaking technique.

Snaking is easy once you get the hang of it. It becomes natural to snake, when you feel you've mastered it. You must consider these four points when snaking:

  1. Recommended Kart/ Character combination
  2. Powerslide Turbo Boosts
  3. How to Snake
  4. When and where should you snake?

Recommended Kart/ Character combination:
Most people on Wi-Fi seem to use either Yoshi, Drybones, Luigi or R.O.B to snake. Players with a high handling ability and low drift ability are the best to control at snaking.

These are the recommended karts:

  • Egg 1 (Yoshi)
  • Drybomber (Drybones)
  • Poltergust 4000 (Luigi)

Use which ever kart and character combination you feel comfortable. It is best you feel comfortable with the character and kart you're using.

How ot powerslide?

Powerslide Turbo Boosts:
Firstly you must know how to powerslide. Powersliding is easy and only requires the player to press left and right, whilst holding "R". By using the scan from the manual above, you should be able to now how to powerslide.

  1. Powerslide turbo boosts are easy to perform once you have mastered it. Whilst going around a corner hold the "R" button to drift; whilst holding R, move left to right to create a blue spark underneath your tyres, then left to right again to create a red spark. Then release R to gain a turbo boost.
  2. When powersliding on your left-hand side use the manouvre above but move right-to-left instead. On the other hand, if your powersliding on your right-hand side steer left-to-right.

How to Snake :
Repetitive powerslide turbo boosts can create maximum boosting, which will create a zig-zag shape similar to a snake, hence the name "snaking". Snaking is simple.

  1. Perform one powerslide turbo boost. Each time you perform a powerslide turbo boost you lean to one side.
  2. Next, press and hold "R" and lean to the other side, and powerslide again (remember to steer left-to-right or right-to-left depending which way you're leaning).
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2. Keep repeating those steps and it will create a snaking manouvre.

Once you master it, you can even make your snaking capability better, by making it quicker to alternate between each powerslide whilst snaking. If you find it hard to snake, I suggest you watch someone else snake, or save someone else's ghost in time trial when they snake, then try and copy it.

When and where should you snake?:
So, when should snaking be used? Snaking can be used on all tracks depending how good you are at doing it. Experienced snakers on Rainbow Road can snake with ease. However, if you are a beginner at snaking, it is best to develop your snaking by trying it out on Figure-8-Circuit in Time Trials. You'll definitely develop snaking with ease in that course. Once you have it mastered, keep practicing on other courses, and analyse other people on Wi-Fi to see their snaking patterns.
