Mario Kart DS - Karts
Home >> Mario Kart DS >> Karts
A brief explanation of how the karts operate.

Mario's Kart

Not all karts are available at first, however as you progress through the game you'll be able to choose any kart for any character. To do this you must [SPOILER] win all of the Cups in Mirror Mode. However, the Kart's rating will change depending on the character driving it. Generally, the light, medium and heavy classes have the same ratings. There are 36 karts in all available.

When selecting a kart, ratings are shown under 6 categories. Make sure you pick an appropriate kart. The karts are rated in the categories below:

  • Speed - The maximum speed of the kart. Higher speed karts are in association with heavier karts/ characters.
  • Acceleration - How long it takes a kart to reach its full speed or how well they can drive off the road. Karts with high acceleration will be able to recover from being hit quicker. Basically the heavier players are crap at this.
  • Weight - How fa... heavy the kart and character combined together is. Heavy characters can knock off wimpy lightweights easily, however with their poor acceleration, it takes a long time for heavyweights to get top speed.
  • Handling - This is how sharp the kart actually steers. This is not associated with drifting.
  • Drift - How far a kart slides whilst performing a powerslide. However, lower drift karts tend to have a better ability to snake. Snaking allows players to reach maixmum speed by continously drifting left and right on straight roads.
  • Items - The likelihood of you getting a good item such as a red shell, star, bullet bill or the worst item. That stupid blue shell!

If you want to be the best of the best, it is best to have a kart with a high handling ability and a quite low drift ability, that way you can snake easier. Snaking goes faster than the maximum speed of a heavyweight. For more on snaking click here.
