There are a few tips and tricks that you ought to know, if you want to master Mario Kart at its full potential.
| Powersliding |
| Mastering: Easy - Medium |
Powersliding gives you a small boost, and an advantage over others. It is best to use this technique around corners.
- To powerslide, press and hold [R]; your character should hop and slide. You'll notice letters flying from the exhaust. At the moment they should be white.
- Steer in the opposite direction that you are sliding (still holding R) then steer the other way, then again twice. Between alternating between these steering directions, you should have seen the letters turn from white, to yellow then orange.
- When your letters appear orange, release [R] for a minimum boost.
It is possible to perform multiple powerslides on straight roads. |

| Recovering |
| Mastering: Easy - Medium |
- When you slip over a banana quickly press and hold the brakes, then accelerator ( [A] & [B] ); you should see an "!" appear to show that you have recovered
- When you get hit, quickly hit the gas three times to recover and get back into the race quicker

| Turbo Start |
| Mastering: Medium |
- At the starting line, wait for Lakitu to switch the lights to the second light.
- Just before the blue light comes on, hold on the accelerator [A].
- You should get a boost.
Now, depending on what character you are and who is in front of you on the starting line you will have to adjust to the situation. For example, if you are a heavy character like Bowser and boost, you'll be able to push everyone in the way. If you are a lightweight like Toad, try and jump when you boost, because if you boost into heavier characters you'll spin out of control. |

| Battle Mode |
| Mastering: Hard |
When in Battle Mode there are various tips that should be considered:
- If you have a red shell, remember you can hit your opponent in front at a side by tilting the control stick left or right whilst shooting.
- Remember to shoot shells backwards.
- Remember to hold items to block red shells from hitting you.
- If you're heavy use your weight to knock a balloon out of them.
- If you're on a course with different levels and you have a red shell, go to the highest floor and shoot from the top. Make sure you direct your shot and it should indefinitely hit them (unless it hits the wall).
- Place fake item boxes in the places of real ones.
- Place bananas in the center of paths.
- Try and lure your opponents into traps (i.e. fake item boxes, bananas).
- If you only have one balloon left, try and avoid your opponent and go in for the attack when you receive a good item such as a red shell.

| Drafting |
| Mastering: Medium |
|
If you line your kart directly behind an opponent, you will see air appear on each side of you, which will give you a slight speed increase over the opponent in front. This technique is known as drafting. |
|
| Weapons |
| Mastering: Varied |
You have to be careful and wise with the weapons you use. Try and save them for the best time. Remember you receive better items when you are in latter places; but I'm not telling you to stay last to get the best items. View the Weapons & Items list for additional help on certain items. |
|
| Weight |
| Mastering: Easy |
If you're playing as a big fella! DK, Wario or Bowser, try and knock your opponents. Just try and run into them, to either knock them out of the way, make them spin out of control, or to knock them off the course. |
